Mamaroneck Football's Schudy Gets Offensive On Defense

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- Mamaroneck linebacker John Schudy was up to his scoring ways again in the annual rivalry game with Port Chester Saturday.

Schudy was in the right place at the right time, scooping up a fumble and returning it 21 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter of Mamaroneck’s 34-13 win over Port Chester in the game’s 86th renewal.

It was the second consecutive year Schudy, a senior, has recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown against Port Chester.

“For a defensive player it is always big when you score a touchdown,” said Schudy, who also registered numerous pressures, along with Dion Duran, on Port Chester quarterback Kyle Drummond. “When you play tough defense, good things will happen.”

Rob Nigro had just given Mamaroneck a 13-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Ross Garfield and Ryan met at the Port Chester return man and dislodged the ball from him. Schudy, who was closing in on the tackle before his teammates got to the Port Chester player, fielded the loose ball on one hop and sprinted the 21 yards untouched.

“Last year when I scored coach told me he hoped it would happen again,” said Schudy of Mamaroneck coach Anthony Vitti. “When I saw the loose ball today, my eyes lit up and I was going to take it and score.

“Scoring two touchdowns in two years feels great, especially in this game because it is a little more important than others.”
