Mamaroneck Football Needs Win for Playoffs

SCARSDALE, N.Y. -- Scarsdale could not have asked for a better situation going into its game Saturday with Mamaroneck. The Raiders, 3-3 this season, need a win to qualify for the Section 1 Class AA Football Championships for a second consecutive year. They will have the opportunity to do so on their home field, where the support is loud and attendance, especially among the student-body, is huge. Scarsdale captain Brandon Berman cited the home-crowd support as a major factor in the team’s last-minute victory over Mahopac earlier this season. Following the thrilling win, Berman noted that the team went over to the home crowd and applauded them for their exuberant support. “Practice has been upbeat this week,” said Scarsdale assistant coach Jay Ciraco, who quarterbacked Harrison to the 2001 Section 1 Class B football title. “We are very pleased with the intensity of our practices. The guys know what is at stake and Scarsdale-Mamaroneck has become quite a big rivalry. It will come down to making plays offensively and being able to tackle in the open field.” Mamaroneck is in the same situation. The Tigers, who are coming in off of an emotional, 50-8 win over archrival Port Chester, need a win to be in contention for a playoff position. Brett Pineros rushed for a career-high 172 yards and two scores last week.
