Pierson has lived in Larchmont with her husband Frank and their family for 20 years. She has three daughters who graduated from Mamaroneck High School.

She is the liaison to Hommocks Middle School and serves on the policy and audit committees. Before her time on the board, she was the president of the PT Council and co-president of SEPTA and the MHS PTSA and a 10-plus year member of the committee of special education.

The Pennsylvania native attended Colgate University and has a master's in communication disorders from Emerson College.

Why would you make a good rep in the coming term?

Because of the experience, because I’m still interested and have a lot more knowledge than I had six years ago. I still have the time. I still care about the community and the children obviously.

What are the three biggest goals you’d work to accomplish?

Certainly a sustainable budget. What I’m most proud of is passing budgets that are responsive to the times, that maintain the curriculum. It just becomes more and more challenging thanks to our state. The fact that we’ve been able to do it up until this point is something I’m proud of. It’s not something I’m looking forward to in the future. Its going to become more challenging.

Identifying the best way to teach a child right now, because they’re different; they’re use of technology is different; the information they get daily is different than it was when I went to school. Teachers are flipping the classroom, sending students home and saying, 'this is what you need to look up and we’ll talk about it tomorrow morning'. It's very different than saying read three chapters in the textbook and we’ll discuss it. It’s more interesting for those kids; reading three pages of dry textbook versus watching live-time videos.

Our perennial challenge is always keeping our communication going in a two-way. We need to continue to address how we get our message out and how we hear from the public.

What’s the best part of Mamaroneck?

I’m working towards everybody wanting what’s best for their kids and being willing to work for it. They step up, they volunteer, they pay the taxes, they support the system. And it really is focused on education. Maybe it’s because that’s what unifies the town, is the school district.

The best part of the school district is that we care about all the children and that we focus on the whole child. That it’s not just education. It’s what challenges are going on at home. How can we expand their thinking in the arts and make them appreciate beauty. And at the same time how do we send out kids that are prepared for the higher academics. But the academics are not the only part of it. It’s something we hope we can keep.
