MAMARONECK, N.Y. – While many students take after-school jobs, Mamaroneck High School’s 2014 salutatorian Surin Ahn has run her own technology consulting business since her sophomore year.

Ahn, who graduated with a 98 grade point average to be named salutatorian, provides website development and support to local businesses and other organizations. She also co-founded Mamaro Tech, a club that provides technology service to the Mamaroneck School District.

After graduating June 25 with 371 classmates, she will take her skills and apply it to a potential major in electrical engineering or computer science at Princeton University.

Even before college, Ahn is interning this summer at an educational organization in Manhattan that uses technology to design personalized instructional models for schools.

“I’m also planning to spend time with my friends and catch up on all of the books I’ve wanted to read,” she said of her summer plans.

Looking back on her last four years, the accomplished cellist said her highlight was playing the Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations at the spring concert. The Variations were Tchaikovsky's first composition for cello and orchestra.

“In the past, I was always accompanied by a pianist so it was amazing to get to perform this piece with the MHS orchestra,” she said.

Ahn has been studying cello for nearly 10 years and has quite the list of accomplishments from her high school years. They include:

  • Principal Cellist in 2012 New York All-State Symphony Orchestra;
  • Principal Cellist in 2013 Area-All State Symphony Orchestra;
  • 2013 New York All-State String Orchestra
  • Nominated for All-National orchestra by New York State School Music
  • Association (NYSSMA)
  • Two-year member of the New York Youth Symphony Orchestra
  • Winner of 2011 Hudson Valley Music Club Competition

The achievements don’t stop there for Ahn, who placed first at both the regional and state level in the Physics Science category at the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, and was a regional finalist in the 2013 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology.

Reacting to her selection as salutatorian, the humble Ahn said, “I’m extremely grateful for this honor and it came as a nice surprise. But I’m also aware that luck and opportunity were a big part of it so I like to keep it in perspective.”
