MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Jennifer Malherbe and Melany Gray were two of the many community members featured in a video honoring School Board Appreciation Week presented at the Mamaroneck Board of Education meeting Tuesday.
Malherbe and Gray are co-presidents of the PTA Council, an umbrella organization that brings together each of Mamaroneck's six school PTAs.
"On behalf of all of these PTA and PTSA units we'd like to sincerely thank each board member for your passion and dedication to excellence and public education for our children," Malherbe said.
The 15-minute video montage also featured several students sharing why they are appreciative of the school board, as well as a musical tribute by the Mamaroneck High School Swing Choir.
Board members not only shared what their experience has been like on the board of education, but lessons learned from their days in kindergarten. Anant Nambiar said a skill he still uses is, if you don't understand something, ask questions.
"It's some of those soft skills that we were probably all taught in kindergarten that have been as important, if not more important, than some of the financial and analytical skills I brought to the table," said Linnet Tse, a nine-year board member. "Things like sharing, taking turns, listening, being patient, playing nice. Those have actually all come into play now that I think about it."
Local officials, Robert Shaps, superintendent of the Mamaroneck School District, Judy Myers, councilwoman for District 7, and George Latimer, member of the State Assembly, were in attendance.
"It may be the most thankless job that exists," Latimer said. "And we trust to the school board and to the teachers and the administrators, the care of what we hope will be our future legacy. School board recognition week is a way for us to stop and say thank you, but we should really say thank you every day."
