Emergency Replacement of Mamaroneck School Heating Unit Needed

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- The rooftop heating system atop the Mamaroneck High School's PACE Auditorium has failed, and the Mamaroneck Board of Education authorized an emergency replacement at its Tuesday night meeting.

George McNally, director of facilities, inspected the unit and advised the board it could not be repaired.

"The school district has determined that the failed heating unit cannot be repaired, and threatens the health, safety and welfare of the students and staff," said Robin Nichinsky, BOE president. "The rooftop heating unit failure has caused PACE Auditorium to fall below appropriate temperatures in cold weather."

McNally said the emergency replacement will cost $43,000, which will come out of the general operating budget.

"We have enough money in the budget to do it," said Meryl Rubenstein, assistant superintendent of business operations for the Mamaroneck School District. "This will expedite it so we're not waiting weeks upon weeks to get bids sent out."

Anant Nambiar, BOE secretary, asked if there were any other options to consider. McNally said: "To get through the rest of the winter, no."

The BOE passed the resolution to replace the heating system, and authorized Dr. Robert Shaps, school superintendent or a designee, to enter into an agreement for the replacement of the heating unit.
