A Suffolk County Sheriff’s deputy on patrol at approximately 3:18 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14 stopped Mykhaylo Zubatyi, 29, of Yonkers, on North Ocean Avenue in Patchogue, for having suspicious license plates.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a DMV check of Zubatyi’s registration plate showed that it actually belonged to a different vehicle.

Zubatyi was pulled over and had valid insurance but no legal registration. The license plate was from a different vehicle he reportedly owned.

During the stop, a deputy took Zubatyi’s driver’s license and the car’s title, ordering Zubatyi to stay in his vehicle.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Zubatyi repeatedly left his vehicle to approach the deputy’s car with questions and was instructed to return to his vehicle several times.

Zubatyi later approached the deputy car again and said he would not wait for the summons and was going to leave.

Zubatyi allegedly reached both arms into the deputy’s car through the window and attempted to take his documents. He was ordered to stop and return to his vehicle and he refused.

According to the Sheriff, a second deputy then arrived and was able to assist in taking Zubatyi into custody.

Zubatyi was arrested and charged with second-degree obstructing governmental administration.

He was issued a court appearance ticket and released under the state’s new bail reform law.

Zubatyi was also cited for not having license plates, improper plates, driving an unregistered motor vehicle and driving an uninspected motor vehicle.
