Driver Charged With Hit And Run In Mamaroneck

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – A New Rochelle driver is accused of hitting an oncoming vehicle on Weaver Street Sunday while glancing at his cell phone, then leaving the scene, according to Mamaroneck Town Police reports.

Christopher Zahner, 25, was charged with leaving the scene of an auto accident, use of a portable electronic device while driving and driving to the left of paved markings, police said.

When tracked down by police, Zahner said he was driving south on Weaver Street when he glanced down at his cell phone, crossed over the double yellow line and struck a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban that was preparing to make a left turn, police said. Zahner also admitted that he then fled the scene without exchanging information or waiting for police, according to the police report.

Zahner had a 23-year-old passenger in his 2001 Chevrolet Suburban. The vehicle he hit was carrying two adults and two teenagers. The occupants of both cars were wearing seat belts and no major injuries were reported.
