Tentative 2012 Budget Work Session Open to Public

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – The Town of Mamaroneck Board will hold six work sessions all day Wednesday at the Weaver Street Firehouse to discuss the 2012 town budget, which in its tentative form, would exceed the mandated 2 percent tax cap. The work sessions are open to the public.

Stephen Altieri, town administrator, presented the budget at the Oct. 19 town board meeting.

"The tax levy that is proposed at this time is $844,000, that's an increase of 4 percent," Altieri said. "The tentative budget proposes a tax levy that is 0.77 percent above the allowable levy under the cap. So obviously there is more work to do."

The greatest increase in appropriations is the pension funds, which increased by $375,000, accounting for 40 percent.

"To get to the level of the cap, we'd need to cup another $175,000 out of this budget, which is not insurmountable, but it certainly means that we would have to look seriously at certain services and determine whether we can continue to provide them," Altieri said. "And that will be the task over the next six weeks."

The board will meet with the following departments on Wednesday:

8:45 a.m. – Police Department10:00 a.m. – Ambulance District11:30 a.m. – Highway Department1:15 p.m. – Community Services/Section 82:30 p.m. – Recreation3:45 p.m. – Fire Department
