Schumer Demands Larchmont Post Office Fix 'Mail-Practice'

LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has had enough of the United States Postal Service's shoddy service in Larchmont. 

At a press conference in Larchmont Friday, Schumer called for the post office to release their audit report of Larchmont’s postal operations in a public meeting within 30 days, and then set forth a specific plan to immediately improve the subpar service. 

Larchmont residents have complained about widespread inconsistent postal delivery service, ranging from irregular delivery to no delivery at all, to mail delivered to alternative receptacles, such as garages. 

Inconsistent mail service has had negative effects on many residents in Larchmont, and more recently in New Rochelle and other surrounding communities, which have been subject to late fees for bills they have never received or for payments that were never delivered.

While the post office has down a review of the problem, Schumer said it has not been shared with the public nor has the problem fixed.

"It is simply mail-practice that for over a year residents in Larchmont and now New Rochelle continue to have shoddy service problems," Schumer said.

Schumer said he would work with Rep. Eliot Engel (D-The Bronx) to help fix the issue.

"Every day we receive new complaints," Engel said.  "One report found mail being thrown away in a dumpster behind one of the post offices."

George Flood, a spokesman for USPS, said he appreciated the feedback from Schumer and said their goal is to provide the best possible mail service.

"The postal team in Larchmont and surrounding Westchester communities work hard for their customers," Flood said. "The delivery of mail is carefully monitored on a daily basis. This assessment of conditions was foundational to our responses to local concerns and will continue to support the administrative decisions we make to strengthen service."

Flood said they have made some decisions to improve service, including hiring five carrier assistants, installing a permanent postmaster and having supervisors walk delivery routes to address misdelivery concerns, had the
