Mamaroneck Theater Presents 'Smokey Joe's Café'

MAMARONECK, NY – For the first time, The Westchester Sandbox Theatre will host its own show at the Emelin Theatre in Mamaroneck in June and July.

Spanning two weekends, “Smokey Joe’s Café” will move from the Sandbox’s 75-seat theater to the few hundred-seat theater at the Emelin.

“It is the perfect show for a place like that because it surrounds a music group,” said Brenda Ferrante, office manager and mother of owner Daniel Ferrante.  “The Emelin does mostly music productions, and they wanted to find the right fit.”

“Smokey Joe’s Café” was the longest musical revue in the history of Broadway. Although it doesn't have much of a theme and consists of no dialogue, jazz, blues and rock and roll classics are sung throughout the entire play. It consists of songs written by the legendary Brill Building tandem of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Together the due wrote the well know songs “Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Yakety Yak” and “Kansas City.”

“For the Emelin Theatre to approach us is really thrilling,” Ferrante said.  “Little by little, we are doing all different things, it’s pretty exciting.”

Daniel Ferrante established the Westchester Sandbox Theatre in 2008, which has continually produced shows since. The theater creates adult and children’s shows and hires both local talent and Broadway actors from New York City. The Sandbox Theatre has grown a great deal since its opening and recently began branching out and traveling to schools for performances.

“When we first opened, we would have 10 to 15 people in the audience, now we are selling out,” Ferrante said. “We are just exploding at the seams.”

Smokey Joe's Café performances are June 29-30 and July 1, 6-8. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. All tickets are $28. For tickets, call 914-698-0098 or visit
