Mamaroneck Resident's Hobby Brings Holiday Cheer

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Elaine Schenkerman's scarves have become popular wear for residents of Mamaroneck's Sarah Neuman Center since she began distributing them as gifts during the holidays.

Schenkerman, 83, has volunteered there for two years. She knits all year long, using fun-fur yarns, so she can spread a little holiday cheer to residents of the nursing home.

"It makes me feel good to volunteer," she said. "I get so much out of the experience, maybe even more than the people I am helping. I really encourage people of all ages to participate in volunteer activities in their community."

The 49-year Mamaroneck resident will distribute her hand-made scarves for a second year, which hasn't gone without notice.

"Our residents love Elaine's handiwork," said Amy Lionheart, staff member at the Sarah Neuman Center. "Some of them wear their scarves for warmth, but many simply accessorize with them because they are so pretty."
