Mamaroneck, Larchmont Streets Torn Up For New Gas Line Installation

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Downtown roads in the villages of Mamaroneck and Larchmont have been closed this week during work hours as Con Edison continues installing higher-pressure gas mains in the area.

A four-inch diameter plastic gas line will be installed in several streets in Mamaroneck and Larchmont, including Wendt Avenue (pictured).

Spencer Place in Mamaroneck was closed to all traffic from Mamaroneck Avenue on Thursday and will continue to be for the next few weeks as Con Edison’s contractor, Persico, excavates the area.

Con Edison will then come in and install four-inch-diameter plastic energy lines to replace the existing six-inch-in-diameter metal gas lines, as it did previously in the Washingtonville neighborhood. Work in that neighborhood took two months.

Village officials were not sure how long work on Spencer Place would take, or if there are more village streets to receive the new energy lines.

In Larchmont, Wendt Avenue is closed to all traffic from Palmer Avenue. Road work started four weeks ago and now stretches from Depot Way West to Larchmont Avenue along Palmer. It is also moving down Chatsworth Avenue from Palmer to Summit avenues, the entire length of Wendt Avenue, as well as Franklin Avenue and a portion of Woodland Avenue, according to Larchmont Mayor Anne McAndrews.

Persico contractors said they hope to complete the project before the start of the school year. McAndrews said contractors and Con Edison are working from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to get the job done as quickly as possible.

However, the Con Edison project has forced Larchmont to put on hold the long-in-the-works $1.6 million Palmer Avenue streetscape project.

“We’re raring to go but current circumstances are not in our favor right now,” Larchmont Mayor Anne McAndrews said. “We’re doing everything we can do to work around this situation and get to work in August.”

The Streetscape project has hit several bumps in the road with the original contractor, Mount Vernon-based DiMarino Brothers. The village issued a stop work order last June, declaring the contractor in default of the contract.

With a new contractor in place in spring 2014, the village was set to go. A staging area had been set up near the Interstate-95 entrance ramp.

Thursday, the outward lane on Palmer was closed at both the intersections of Chatsworth and Larchmont avenues.
