Larchmont Kids, Parents in Awe of One-Man Circus

LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- Noah Katz not only got a big blue and yellow balloon hat, but the thrill of a lifetime when Greg Milstein, the one-man circus, picked him from a packed crowd of kids in the Village Center to help pull off the trick that would be the grand finale.

Katz, 9, watched in amazement as Milstein hopped on to the giant unicycle, leaving little room between his head and the ceiling. The one-man circus then asked Katz to hand him a plate and a pole to perform the spinning plate trick on his chin. Not satisfied with the degree of difficulty, Milstein requested the fourth-grader at Murray Avenue hand him three bars to juggle.

The trick combined all of those he had used to amaze the crowd of four through 12-year-olds. Katz jumped to hand him the third bar as Milstein pulled off all three tricks seamlessly.

A few tricks earlier, Timmy O'Hara, 6, participated in the plate-spinning trick, receiving his own orange hat for a job well done. "I thought it was terrific," said his mother Amy, of Larchmont.

Milstein is the executive director of the National Circus Project (NCP), a not-for-profit educational outreach program founded in 1984. He brought his show to the Larchmont Library last year when the new Children's Room re-opened. Children's Librarian Rebecca Eller found NCP online and decided it would be a good way to celebrate the newly renovated facility.

"I thought it was pretty entertaining," said Kevin Koch, who brought his 18-month-old daughter Emma, his niece Sarah and nephew Jacob.

Families came from all over Westchester, including Koch, who hails from Pearl River. Milstein performs his act annually at his nieces and nephews elementary school in Pearl River. Although they had seen it before, they still enjoyed the slapstick performance.
