Five Questions: Village Mayor Seeks Second Term

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- The Daily Mamaroneck will be compiling candidate profiles before the Nov. 8 elections. Each candidate was asked the same questions.

Mayor Norman Rosenblum, 68, is a third-generation Mamaroneck resident. The manager of contracts administration at Safe Flight Instrument Corporation in White Plains was elected mayor in 2009 and is running for a second term on the Republican, Independent and Conservative ballot lines.

He has served as village trustee, chair of the Tree Committee, liaison to the Fire Council and Tree Committee and has been a member of the Town of Rye's Board of Assessment Review, Board of Trustees Westchester Joint Water Works, CAP, Washingtonville Housing Alliance, Mamaroneck Shares and the Elks Club.?

Why would you be a good representative in the coming term?

Continue the policies that have resulted in the Village of Mamaroneck becoming the destination for food, theater and shopping, as well as being rated by CNN Money as # 60 of best small towns in America and #1 in New York State. I have successfully opened all lines of communication for the democratic process and volunteer programs which will continue.

If elected, what are the three biggest goals you'd work to accomplish?

1) To increase flood mitigation with continued dredging projects and purchase of excavation equipment. Amend zoning codes to assist homeowners in raising houses above flood level, as well as mechanical equipment out of the basements.2) Develop increase parking policies and spaces. This is vital to the continued success currently enjoyed by the Village of Mamaroneck.3) Review and develop revenue sources other than real estate-based taxes to keep increases at a minimum.

Has the local government made any mistakes or had any oversights during your term? How do you plan to avoid them going forward?

The recent increase of legal costs are a result of unwise actions by the majority of the Board of Trustees at great expense to the tax payers. I will continue to bring this to the attention of the public as well as other policies to make sure all are aware of these unwise moves and look to rectify them.

What specifically makes you different from your opponent?

I am proactive versus a reactive history of my opponents past and present history on the Board of Trustees. I have and will continue to bring new ideas to the forefront for discussion with the primary goal of continuing to keep the Village of Mamaroneck as the number one destination in Westchester and control the best expenditure of tax dollars while seeking alternative revenue sources other than real estate-based tax. A difference in philosophy regarding the budget process with a main goal to keep any increase as minimal as possible.I support the necessary equipment for Police and Fire protectionActive proponent to settle potentially catastrophic financial legal actions against the Village of Mamaroneck without the appearance of undue influence by parties to such actions.

What's the best part about Mamaroneck?

The Volunteers that live in the Village and are responsible for the great growth and in our quality of life that is enjoyed by all who live and visit the Village of Mamaroneck. They include, but are certainly not limited to: The Volunteer Fire department, MEMS, Harbor Island Conservancy; Chamber of Commerce, Washingtonville Housing Alliance, CAP, Hispanic Resource Center and all the Boards and Commissions in the Village.
