First Annual Holiday Arts Fair Screams Mamaroneck

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Mary-Ellen Dorfman has always admired her friend Kathleen Catanzariti's hand-made garments, and was delighted to buy a few from her at the First Annual Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair at the Mamaroneck Library Saturday.

The two Rye Neck mothers have children in the F.E. Bellows elementary school in Rye Neck. Dorfman recently bought her daughter Kaitlyn, 9, a cupcake hat. Now, thanks to Catanzariti, she will have a pink and yellow cupcake scarf to go along with it.

"I think it's very interesting and diverse," said Dorfman of the Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair. "You get to see your neighbor's talents, get some unique gifts and support them."

Catanzariti has been knitting since she was seven years old, but only as a hobby. Saturday was the first time she has put her colorful clothes up for sale at a fair.

The Rye Neck resident was one of 35 artists who put their work on display in the library's Community Room, Program Room and Gallery. Over 70 artists responded, but space was limited, said Phyllis Gutterman, chairperson for the Village of Mamaroneck Council of the Arts. Each artist will contribute 5 percent of their proceeds back to the Mamaroneck Library for the purchase of wall hangers in the Community Room for events like this.

While browsing the wide variety of mediums, Dorfman admired Michelle Jackson's clocks made out of vinyl records. Bruce Roberston, of Mamaroneck, looked for Christmas presents like jewelry.

In addition to jewelry, the fair featured knit and crochet items for adults, babies and pets, hand painted scarves, paintings of all sizes, photographs, functional and art quilts, bags, ornaments and hand painted glassware.

"This is a good way to utilize the new facility, and a good way to brink people in to the new library," Roberston said.
