Mamaroneck Theater Hosts 'Into The Woods'

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Wizards, witches, Cinderella and Rapunzel should watch out this weekend as The Westchester Sandbox Theatre in Mamaroneck kicks off the first production, “Into the Woods,” in its newly renovated theater.

“‘Into The Woods’ was the perfect show for us to debut the new expansion of our venue. With a larger stage, more seating and new state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment, the Sandbox Theatre has undergone a magical transformation,” said Artistic Director Jason Summers. “This is the perfect piece to showcase that magic.”

Due to the theater’s popularity within the community, it became apparent that it needed expanding. The theater recently added 23 more seats and 7 feet to the stage, making it deeper than it was before.

The storyline follows a couple who is cursed to be childless by a neighboring witch. The curse leads them on a journey to find special objects that will break the evil witch’s spell. Throughout the play they will encounter childhood story characters Cinderella and Rapunzel, among others, while lying, swindling and cheating their way through.

The Westchester Sandbox Theatre, a year round production theater, opened in 2008. The theater produces shows for all ages, but also runs a young people’s theater, which showcases 10 productions a year, giving younger performs a chance to act on a stage.

“We do our best to provide quality entertainment for the community and to also expose them to new and exciting theater. The arts are vital in any community,” said Summers.

The production is for all ages, although, the theater said the second act may be a bit scary for younger children. The cast includes Julie Bretones, Bill Corry, Brian Craft, Karen Derby, Lindsay Dzubay, Britain Gebhardt, Phyllis Gutterman, Katie Lambert, Michael Mastroianni, Katie A. Mussler, Kevin Necciai, Alison Schmidt, Kevin Scott, Charlie Stoop, Emily Swindal and Victoria Weinberg.

“Into the Woods” will run for three weekends, starting Saturday night. Tickets are $25 for adults and $22 for students. Tickets can be purchased online. The theater is located at 931C East Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck.
