Mamaroneck Shares Is Ready for Block Party Thursday

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Mamaroneck Shares, a series of four block parties that raise money for charities in Mamaroneck, kicks off Thursday evening.

“The goal of Mamaroneck Shares is to highlight local merchants and raise money for local charities,” Mamaroneck Shares co-founder Peggy Jackson said.

The Mamaroneck Shares block party series, hosted on Mamaroneck Avenue, has increased from 3,000 people per event in 2010 to more than 10,000 last year, which raised more than $30,000 for local charities.

“It’s gotten to be a really big deal,” Jackson said.

Traffic will be detoured for the evening, allowing pedestrians to walk up and down the street. The party will feature live music from four different bands and local Mamaroneck merchants and restaurants. The block party is kid-friendly and will have face painting, a bounce castle, and an obstacle course among other activities.

One of the featured highlights of the block party is the dunk-tank, which Mayor Norman S. Rosenblum volunteers to sit in each year. Deputy Mayor Louis N. Santoro will be collecting $5 per person for a chance to dunk the mayor. Last year the dunk-tank alone raised $1,200.

“It’s a lot of fun, the whole idea of it is to raise funding for local charities,” Rosenblum said. “People love to be able to dunk the mayor.”

This year Mamaroneck Shares is raising funds for Mamaroneck Emergency Medical Services, Keep aBreast, The Westchester Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk and The Mamaroneck-Larchmont Student Aid Fund.

“Our goal is that everyone who visits Mamaroneck Avenue pays $1 towards charity,” Jackson said.

The Mamaroneck Shares block party will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday and will continue until 10:30 p.m. It is the first in a series of four parties. The other  dates are July 19, August 16 and September 21.
