Mamaroneck Fireman's Carnival Links Generations

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Families have been attending the Fireman’s Carnival at Harbor Island Park in Mamaroneck for generations.

“I used to come in high school and now that I have a kid, I come again,” Lissi Garcia of White Plains said while standing with her husband, Julio, and their daughter, Valentino. “It was always packed and I came with a lot of friends.  It was always a good time.”

The family-friendly carnival features classic rides such as the Ferris wheel, zipper, giant slide, swings and a children's train ride. There are also various games to play, such as darts, shoot-out-the-star, toss the ball and water gun games.

Maria Valencia brought her daughters Sophia and Evelyn to celebrate her third daughter, Mariela’s, seventh birthday.

“I asked her, ‘what do you want to do for your birthday?’” Valencia said.  “And she replied, ‘for my birthday I want to go to the carnival.’ So here we are; she loves it. And I like it for her too.”

The carnival has been successful so far according to Village of Mamaroneck Fire Department Chief Chris Szymanowski.

“Everyone has been happy, no complaints,” he said on Sunday evening.  “It’s cooled off a little bit. It’s nice.”

This year’s carnival featured local food vendors.  Mamaroneck restaurants Garden Catering, Rani Mahal and Paleteria Fernandez all dished out their specialties to hungry customers. Antojitos Mexicanos of White Plains also served food at the carnival.

Paleteria Fernandez co-owner Florencio Fernandez was a bit disappointed in this year’s overall turnout and remembered more people coming to last year’s carnival. But he said he was pleased with participating in the carnival and working with the Fire Department.

“I think it’s really good for the town, I see a lot of people from other towns and cities come here; different faces,” he said.  He also said that next year he would enjoy joining the carnival's planning committee to make the event even bigger.

The carnival runs through July 5. It is open each night from 7-11 p.m., except for Independence Day, when it will be open from 4-11 p.m. and will include the fireworks show.
