Larchmont Girl Scouts Band Together To Help Wheelchair Bound Friend

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- On Wednesday, June 7, the oldest and youngest members of the community will come together to "walk and roll" so that a wheelchair-bound Girl Scout can join her troop at their meeting house in Larchmont.

For Olivia Vander Woude, a 6-year-old Larchmont resident with Aicardi Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder, it was a dream come true when newly-formed Girl Scout Troop 2997 reached out to invite her to join them last year. Vander Woude's disorder leaves her wheelchair bound, non-verbal, and dependent on others for her daily care, and this was an incredible opportunity for her to interact with other girls her age.

Unfortunately, the troop quickly found out that the Girl Scout meeting house where they would be holding their activities lacks a ramp for Vander Woude's wheelchair.

That's when Pat Allen, a Girl Scout volunteer and Larchmont resident reached out to local organizations. She found solace in The New Jewish Home, Sarah Neuman, which provides rehabilitation and long-term care for the elderly.

Now, the Mamaroneck nursing home is home to the fundraiser. The goal is to raise $30,000 needed to build the ramp. Folks can sponsor a Girl Scout, send in a donation, or just come and join the festivities.

Walk & Roll will take place on a specific course on The New Jewish Home, Sarah Neuman grounds. It will be held from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and will feature balloons, streamers, music by The School of Rock and, of course, tasty Girl Scout cookies.

Roughly 40 Girl Scouts and 40 elders, led in procession by Vander Woude and Sarah Neuman resident Margaret Oakley, who herself is a former Girl Scout, are expected to participate.

The event is free and open to the public with a rain date of Thursday, June 8, (same time). The New Jewish Home, Sarah Neuman is at 845 Palmer Ave in Mamaroneck.
