Larchmont's Sunshine Coffee Roasters Set To Close For Renovations

LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- Like squirrels wisely storing up nuts for the winter, patrons of Sunshine Coffee Roasters (SRC) are loading up on beans in anticipation of the Larchmont shop’s temporary closure.

SRC opened at 1932 Palmer Ave. last September just steps from the train station.

Co-owners Michael and Debbie Contopoulos, who live in Larchmont, and John Minotti, a New Rochelle resident, plan to shut its doors for five weeks or so, starting on Monday, Feb. 20, so they can renovate the space from “top to bottom.”

The space previously housed Aroma Coffee Roast, which was founded by David Nadelson in 1992.

The coffee shop is long and narrow, said Minotti Tuesday, comparing it to a “crowded subway car,” especially when commuters pile in for their morning jolt of caffeine.

There are also lots of families with young children in the village and getting a stroller in and out of the shop can sometimes be tricky, Minotti said.

The plan is to move the counter to the back, which will open up floor space and help with “customer comfort,” he explained.

The walls will be redone with subway tile, the counters with recycled wood and the floor with concrete.

Michael Contopoulos was quoted in an earlier Daily Voice story as saying their “goal is for the space to retain its local neighborhood vibe while also making over in a way that Brooklyn hip meets Westchester casual."

SRC, which roasts and grinds its own coffee beans, serves light bites such as soups and bagels with cream cheese, but it might expand the menu someday, Minotti said.

Customers are picking up five-week supplies of java, which work out – depending on how many cups they drink – to about three to six pounds, Minotti said.

In a Facebook post, SRC advised patrons to let them know their order in advance so it can “prepare and roast accordingly.”

“We don’t want anyone to go without their Sunshine fix while we renovate,” the post said.

SRC is at 1932 Palmer Ave., Larchmont, (914) 341-1899,
