LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- It's not every business owner that is able to reinvent her company and still survive, but Melanie Rose, owner of beadz, has been able to do that and more.

Rose's Larchmont-based jewelry business, where folks can make their own items or buy items as gifts, has been in business for 21 years, 17 of which included a retail location on Boston Post Road. At her storefront locale, she sold beads, handmade accessories and offered parties. She closed the shop three years ago as the retail end of the business was soft, and decided to reinvent the business -- without a store.

So far, her strategy is working.

Her direction instead now includes teaching workshops and orchestrating parties and events for children and adults. She teaches at a host of after school programs at schools and recreation centers throughout Westchester including all Larchmont/Mamaroneck elementary schools, Greenville School in Edgemont, Hutchinson and Prospect Hill in Pelham, Osborne School in Rye, Ward School in New Rochelle, Scarsdale Recreation, the Town of New Castle Recreation, Rye Recreation, as well as many private clubs and summer camps.

And, she does a large number of adult parties -- think 30, 40 and 50-something birthday parties.

Rose said the secret to her success is her hands-on approach, high end selection of beads, charms and components and top-notch customer service. Many clients have become friends as she's done countless birthday parties, bar/bat mitzvahs and sweet 16's, watching kids grow up in the process.

"Many children have taken my classes for several years," she said. To keep it fresh, she's forever "shopping” for beautiful and unique beads, charms and components and she tries to introduce new and useful jewelry and accessory ideas to her classes.

And, she travels anywhere and everywhere, including to New York City, Bergen, Rockland and Fairfield Counties, as well as all over Westchester.

"What sets me apart is that I run all the classes, workshops and events myself, though I have help for larger events," said Rose. "I am a very hands on person, and the business I have built is a reflection of me."
