South Salem's Haller Ends Soccer Career At Duke

KATONAH, N.Y. - South Salem resident and former Harvey School soccer star Maddy Haller played her final college soccer game Friday in Duke's 1-0 loss to Penn State in the quarterfinals of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Championships.

Haller, a senior defender who helped the Blue Devils upset two top-seeded teams in the tournament, said her team had hoped to go all the way this year.

”We wanted a national championship bad this year. But I have no doubts that next year’s team can do what this year’s team could not," Haller said. “I have had a truly remarkable experience. I came to Duke not really knowing what to expect, and have had an amazing time playing for this program.”

Haller, who was a top scholar and all-star athlete at Harvey, was recruited to play for Duke. She continued her prowess on and off the field in college, having been recently named to the Capital One Academic All-District III women's soccer team for the third year in a row. She is a history major with a 3.58 grade-point average and is considering a career in law.

The 15th-ranked Blue Devils, concluding their 2012 season with a 15-6-2 overall record, reached the NCAA Tournament all four years of Haller’s Duke career, including last year when they lost 1-0 to Stanford in the Women’s Cup Final.
