SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. -- Eco-conscious students at Meadow Pond Elementary School in South Salem are making the Earth a little greener through the new group Recycling Matters this year.
“[Recycling Matters] is comprised of fifth-grade students who want to help the Earth by keeping items out of the landfills and reusing them, while helping others at the same time,” said Lara Monasch, the group’s advisor. “This is accomplished by collecting different items each month that can be reused.”
So far this year, students have collected more than 27 pounds of costumes to donate before Halloween to Katonah’s Northern Westchester Community Center, a number of towels and newspapers to benefit Ridgefield, Conn. animal shelter R.O.A.R. (Ridgefield Operation for Animal Rescue), and gently used books to help promote literacy for children ages birth to 11 years at the Northern Westchester Community Center.
Additionally, Recycling Matters members have been collecting refundable bottles and cans on an ongoing basis at Meadow Pond. Monies collected from the recyclables will help support various charitable programs.
First up, the students have set a goal to purchase breakfast foods and toiletries for an emergency shelter in Mount Kisco for 10 or more homeless men and women.
