Lewisboro Schools Won't Let Irene Delay Opening

LEWISBORO, N.Y. – Lewisboro schools are set to open as scheduled Wednesday despite the havoc caused by Tropical Storm Irene.

All grades will report on time except for ninth, which will have a two-hour delay. Grades 10 through 12 will have an early dismissal. All elementary schools will have regular hours.

All district buildings have been closed to the public since Irene struck, re-opened Tuesday. Superintendent’s Conference Day will take place as planned Tuesday, but with an abbreviated schedule.

District officials said parents whose children have not yet received a transportation location slip should use the same bus stop as last year.

The new school year will mark the debut of Paul Kreutzer as the superintendent of the Katonah-Lewisboro School District. Kreutzer came to the district from Wisconsin, where he became a school principal at the age of 25 and was named superintendent of the North Lake School District at the age of 29, making him the youngest superintendent in the state at the time. Most recently he was superintendent for the New Berlin School District in Wisconsin.

“We were struck by the natural beauty,” said Kreutzer, who bought a house in the Truesdale Lake region of Lewisboro. “We were impressed with the sense of community and child-centered values – the honoring of the ecology and the environmental sensibilities."
