John Jay High School in Cross River will retain the "Indians" mascot after more than 58 percent of students voted to keep the current nickname, according to school officials.

"Campus Congress is congratulated for taking the initiative and seeking to engage their peers in issues of importance to them," said Principal Steven Siciliano. "It is important to reiterate that while the results are non-binding and need careful and thoughtful consideration, your voice in this discussion was sought and valued."

The results are as follows:

  • 949 Ballots cast (89% of all students participated)
  • 399 Yes (42%)
  • 550 No (58%)

The vote came about after members of the Campus Congress met with other students to discuss the issue and express their concern about discriminating against other ethnic groups. It was decided that a vote would be taken in an effort to all students to express their thoughts.

This isn't the first time the school has undertaken the issues, on at least two occasions over the past 20 years the same issues have been raised.

In January, the Campus Congress will study the results with the administration, reflect upon this experience, and have input into determining any next steps, Siciliano added. All students are invited to the Jan. 22, meeting.

"Regardless of individual positions on the outcome of this poll, students are reminded that they are expected to treat others in school and on social media with respect and maturity," Siciliano said in a statement. "Please do not allow a moment’s passion to leave a permanent footprint."
