The volunteers coordinated a food drive over the holidays that collected a half of a ton of goods that they are donating to the Community Center of Northern Westchester in Katonah.
The Community Center began in 1992 and has been providing food and clothing to its clients ever since, officials said. The food pantry still remains at the core of the Center, but the range of services has been greatly expanded over the last 20 years, according to the community center.
In addition to providing food and clothing for thousands of households across more than 30 communities in Northern Westchester, the Center said it offers a range of classes and programs and works directly with clients to assist them in gaining access to other resources, such as health care, education and social services.
Nearly 1,800 families came to the Center for help in 2011, 10 times the number that came 20 years ago, according to the community center. Children comprise 33 percent of those who received food from the Center’s Food Pantry.
