Jonathan DeLaura, who was previously known to live in Yorktown, was sentenced on Tuesday, April 1 to 485 months in prison, which translates to nearly 40 and a half years, the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York announced.
According to federal prosecutors, DeLaura sent obscene material to a 15-year-old boy while being required by law to register as a sex offender. He also received, distributed, and possessed child pornography, officials added.
DeLaura has a lengthy criminal past that dates back to October 2009, when he was convicted upon a guilty plea of sexual misconduct (engaging in oral/anal sexual conduct without consent) in Bronx County Court. He was sentenced in December 2009 to a term of 60 days in prison and six years probation, and at that time was required to register with the New York State Sex Offender Registry.
A year later, in December 2010, DeLaura violated his probation and was resentenced to a term of one year in prison. He was eventually released in April 2011.
After this though, he soon resumed his criminal activity—between May 5, 2011, through around May 10, 2011, DeLaura used a file-sharing program to receive and distribute files containing photos and videos of child porn in Westchester, prosecutors said.
Later that year, in November 2011, DeLaura contacted a 15-year-old boy in an internet chat room and posed as a 17-year-old girl while using the screen name "sillyrabbit," according to federal officials.
After exchanging some messages, DeLaura sent sexually explicit photos to the boy. He then met with him on two occasions and engaged in sexual activity with him, prosecutors said.
The third time he tried to meet with the victim, in February 2012, DeLaura was arrested by officers of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department. After this, authorities searched his home and found an iPod with around 162 videos that contained pictures of child pornography and around five still photos of images also containing similar material.
This iPod also had sexually explicit pictures that DeLaura sent the boy.
On February 3, 2012, DeLaura was convicted of two counts of third-degree criminal sexual act in Putnam County Court and sentenced to a prison term of 32 months to 8 years. He finished this sentence in January 2020 and has been jailed on federal charges since.
DeLaura pleaded guilty to receiving, distributing and possessing child pornography, sending obscene material to a 15-year-old boy, and sending that obscene material while being a person required by law to register as a sex offender on July 1, 2024.
In addition to his prison term, DeLaura will also serve ten years of supervised release.
