The alleged theft, which was caught on surveillance camera, occurred on Friday, July 5 in the afternoon hours while the victim was at the shop and left her pocketbook inside the ice cream store, according to New Canaan Police.

The alleged victim went to police to make a complaint on Saturday, July 6 at 12:30 a.m., said police.

Through the posting on social media of still images from the video surveillance, Lida Martinez, 53, was reportedly identified as the suspect, according to police.

On Tuesday, July 9 at approximately 9 p.m., Martinez went to the New Canaan Police Department to discuss the theft of the purse, police said.

She reportedly told police she took the purse with the intention of returning it to the rightful owner, according to police.

The owner of the purse was subsequently contacted and it was allegedly determined that cash was missing from the purse, said police.

Based on the investigation, Martinez was given a misdemeanor summons for the charge and released on a promise to appear in court on Tuesday, July 23.

She was charged with sixth-degree larceny, according to New Canaan Police.
