A reported luring incident involving a student in Northern Westchester was a misunderstanding, according to officials.

Police were notified on Friday, Nov. 2 of a driver in a dark-colored SUV who allegedly attempted to make contact with a Fox Lane Middle School student near the intersection of Parkview Place and Lafayette Street in Mount Kisco at about 3 p.m.

The incident led to an increased police presence near the school, following a request from Bedford Schools Superintendent Christopher Manno.

According to police, the 11-year-old girl reported that the driver of the parked SUV was making a suspicious gesture toward her. However, it was later learned he was simply looking for directions.

"Based on the perceived circumstances of this event, those who reported the incident did exactly what law enforcement encourages of any victim of or witness to a suspicious incident — be as observant as possible without jeopardizing personal safety and report the incident to police as soon as possible,” police said in an alert posted over the weekend.

Over the weekend, Manno said “it is heartening that our student did exactly the right thing in this suspicious and scary circumstance by running away and finding the nearest trusted adult to provide assistance.”

He also noted that police investigators determined that students in the area were safe and there was never a threat regarding Friday’s incident.
