Mail services at the North Salem Post Office have been temporarily suspended after a motorist drove into the building, causing extensive damage.

The United States Postal Service issued an alert on Friday, Feb. 15, warning that “in the interest of public and employee safety,” retail customer service operations are temporarily suspended at the North Salem Post Office on June Road.

Officials said that a vehicle ran into an exterior wall near the lobby door of the 2,970-square-foot facility. Police said that there were no injuries reported, no mail was damaged, though the structure suffered damage. Facility repairs are currently underway.

The USPS said that street delivery will be unaffected. While damage repairs are ongoing in the front lobby, Post Office Box customers can pick up their mail in the back of the building. Customers with attempted delivery notices, package pick-ups or vacation hold mail retrievals can also pick-up their mail at the back of the Post Office.

No timetable has been released for the resumption of retail services at the post office. The cause of the crash has not been released.

According to the USPS, while repairs are ongoing, regular retail services are available on Main Street in South Salem, at Market Plaza in Somers and on Post Office Road on Waccabuc.
