Cross River Merchants Muddle Through Power Outage

CROSS RIVER, N.Y. – Business owners in the Cross River Plaza were still without power on Tuesday afternoon and while many remained closed, others opened their doors and tried to muddle through.

DeCicco Family Markets, which just celebrated its grand opening last Friday, was using a generator to keep some of its lights on and keep one register open. Even using the generator was a struggle – the battery died and staff from neighboring Lewisboro Hardware pitched in the help jump start it.

Despite the efforts of the generator, the store has lost a significant amount of inventory.

“I can’t say how much in dollar amounts right now, but it’s a lot,” said Frank DeCicco, Jr.

The store was in the process of receiving a large ice delivery Tuesday morning and DeCicco said they have plenty on hand for customers.

“Before the storm hit, we had just had an ice delivery,” he said. “We have a cooler downstairs for it. We also have lots of water, candles, matches and batteries.”

DeCicco’s brother-in-law, Jim Capriotti, said that the store is only accepting cash because its credit card system is down.

“The generator only provides limited power,” he said.

The store was oddly surreal scene on Tuesday, as just a handful of shoppers pushed their carts along dimly light aisles.

Next door, several stores in the plaza remained opened. Lewisboro Hardware was doing business, as was La Famiglia, the pizza restaurant. However, La Famiglia was only serving regular pizza with no toppings. No salads or sandwiches were available during the blackout either.

Mike Novak, the owner of the Cross River Wine Merchant, said he planned to stay open during the daylight hours until power was restored.

“We’re selling wine in the dark,” he joked. “We’ll be open but we will only be accepting cash and checks. We also can’t run our phone or the Internet.”
