Parent Council: Vote Yes on Kat-Lewisboro School Budget

LEWISBORO, N.Y. -- TheDailyLewisboro.com accepts signed, original letters to the editor. Letters may be e-mailed to letters@thedailylewisboro.com.

To the Editor:

On Tuesday, May 15, the community will have the opportunity to vote on the proposed 2012-13 school budget and a proposition authorizing the expenditure of funds for capital projects. The Katonah-Lewisboro Parent Council supports both propositions.

The Parent Council fully supports the 2012-13 Board of Education’s proposed budget. The proposed budget maintains the integrity of the educational programming and minimizes teacher reductions, while enhancing technology education and staff development, despite the many challenges the District faced in creating it. These obstacles included a state imposed property tax cap, additional unfunded state mandates for implementing new programs (APPR and RTI), and salaries and benefits which taken altogether comprise over 80 percent of the budget.

The Parent Council also supports the second proposition on the ballot, authorizing the district to use $5.9 million from its reserves/fund balance to address prioritized and much needed capital projects, because it is equally responsible.  These monies are in the reserve fund due to successful contract negotiations and positive collective bargaining agreements. Use of these funds demonstrates continued long-term planning focused on health, safety and energy efficiency that benefits everyone and will have no tax impact for taxpayers.

We urge all voters to join us in voting “Yes” to the budget proposition and the capital expenditure proposition on May 15.

Sincerely,

Katonah-Lewisboro School District’s Parent Council
