Bronx resident Marcela Romero was killed in the fatal collision, which happened at around 6:35 a.m. on Thursday near mile marker 26.4 southbound in the town of Southeast. Troopers and investigators from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene, New York State Police said.
According to police, the crash involved a 1999 Honda Civic carrying three family members from the Bronx, and a 2024 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by a 35-year-old Larchmont man who was not injured in the crash.
The rear seat passenger in the Honda, identified as Romero, was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash, troopers said.
Police say the Civic was being driven by Romero's 24-year-old granddaughter, with her 25-year-old sister in the front seat and Romero in the back seat. The family was traveling southbound when the vehicle attempted to change lanes from the left to the center.
According to statements from both the driver and the front seat passenger, the driver tried to avoid a collision with another car already in the center lane by steering back into the left lane. The sudden maneuver caused the Civic to strike the left guide rail, then collide with the rear driver’s side of the Ford F-150.
The Honda sustained significant front-end damage and came to rest in the left lane.
The crash temporarily closed the left and center lanes of I-684 southbound, which reopened by 12:30 p.m., authorities said.
The incident remains under active investigation by state police. No charges have been announced.
