Webb Leads Harrison Softball to 8-4 Win in Opener

HARRISON, N.Y. — Once the bats were warm, the Harrison varsity softball team kept them sizzling Tuesday.

The Huskies, led by Jenna Webb, pounded out 12 hits in an 8-4 win over visiting Scarsdale in the season-opener for both teams.

Webb, who will attend Springfield College next fall and play softball, went three-for-three, drove in four runs and scored three. Alyx Scapperotti had two hits and also scored three runs, and Aly Brabant went two-for-four with two runs scored.

Eighth-grader Christina DiCarlo, making her first varsity start, scattered just six hits and made three strikeouts. The Huskies also turned a pair of double plays. Left fielder Sam Chiarella snared a line drive and doubled the runner off second in the fifth, and then in the sixth, first baseman Kendra Deschamps caught a flare and tagged the runner out going back to first.

"We were really excited to play after getting back from Florida" for spring training, Webb said. "We played pretty good, and we all came together as a team."

Harrison was trailing 4-3 after the third inning, but the offense erupted for five runs in the fourth and fifth innings as the Huskies made the adjustment to Scarsdale pitcher Yuki Sekine.

"We were waiting for our pitches and what we liked, not settling for what she wanted," Webb said. "Everyone was relaxed, saw the pitches they liked and drove the ball. She was throwing to me on the outside part of the plate so I just moved up on the plate more."

Harrison took the lead for the good in the fourth. With one out, Brabant singled and Scapperotti was hit by a pitch, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Both scored as Webb followed with a single up the middle. Webb scored on a Jordan Valentzas groundout.

In the fifth inning, Webb ripped a ball off the fence in dead center for double, chasing home Scapperotti and Brabant.

Scarsdale scored twice in the first inning and added two more in the third to take a 4-3 lead. Rachel Halperin went two-for-three with an RBI and two runs scored. Taylor Mancini had two hits and an RBI, and Dana Goldstein singled in a run.
