PCRA Rowers Raise Money, Prepare for Spring Season

PELHAM, N.Y. – The Pelham Community Rowing Association finished its winter season with its first Ergathon on Saturday, March 3.

The association’s goal was to raise $20,000 at the event, in which rowers participated in a 90-minute marathon on an indoor rowing machine known as an ergometer. The 90 participants rowed 1.5 million meters on the machines and raised $34,800 for the association.

The association plans to use the money to buy two new carbon-fiber racing shells.

The group has nearly doubled in size in the past two years. It is made up of rowers from more than 10 local middle schools and high schools.

The winter season was an active one for the association. Twenty-six of its rowers competed in the 28th CRASH-B Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships, the oldest and largest such event in the world, at Boston University’s Agganis Arena on Feb. 19. About 2,300 rowers in different age and weight groups competed for the fastest times on ergometers over 2,000 meters.

In the Junior Women’s Openweight Class, Mamaroneck High School senior Yasmine Hemida finished 18th in a class of more than 200 rowers, with a time of 7:28. Hemida had won USRowing’s St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, another indoor event, the previous week. Hemida will row at Syracuse University next year.

Harrison High School sophomore Liliane Lindsay finished 26th in the same event with a time of 7:32. She had placed second at the Massacre.

Scarsdale High School senior Ian Klein finished 22nd in the men’s lightweight class. He won in that same class at the Massacre. Klein will row for Harvard University next year.

The Pelham Community Rowing Association Youth Program will compete in several regattas throughout the spring as the rowers prepare for the New York State Scholastic Championships. They can also qualify for the USRowing National Youth Championships, held in Oak Ridge, Tenn., in June.
