HARRISON, N.Y. – The Harrison girls varsity basketball team had a huge win Monday, one that could fuel the Huskies going into the Section 1 Class A Championships.

Harrison scored the final six points in the last 19 seconds for a 40-34 win over Alexander Hamilton.

“Every game is a learning experience and when you have a young team any win is a good win,” Harrison coach Lou Kail said. “We are trying to get to playing our best basketball come February 13. This win is a step in the right direction."

Even though the 2012 Section 1 Class C champions lost their two best players to injury – Maia Hood and Tiffany Corselli – depth enabled the Red Raiders to maintain a lead.

“Our girls did a great job of playing who was on the floor,” Kail said. “It would have been easy to get caught up in their losses. Unfortunately, injuries happen and you hate to see them happen to such two dynamic players, but I told the girls we have to concern ourselves with who is on the court and winning a basketball game.”

Harrison received a stellar effort from junior forward Kyle Lefkowitz, who finished with nine points and a game-high 17 rebounds.

“As we get closer and closer to sectional time, Kyle continues to raise her game,” Kail said. “The last three games she’s had 43 rebounds and has been the backbone to our success. Although she is usually undersized, her work ethic and constant motor has really carried us the last couple of games.”
