The Moody’s investment firm sponsors the annual competition, which draws top mathematicians from throughout the East Coast.
Teams of five or fewer students have 14 hours to download and solve an engineering and mathematics problem.
Each school can only enter two teams; the following students represented Harrison this year:
- Dillon Bogart
- Andrea Bolivar
- Evan Burger
- Andrew Carton
- Ella Eisinger
- Amr El Azizi
- Phil Milana
- Sarah Ryan
- Mihoko Sakanaka
- Jessica Scazzero
“Both Harrison teams were comprised of all juniors; one team was all girls and the other team was all boys,” Michael Ciavarella, a Harrison High math teacher, said in a press release.
“I am proud to say that for the first time in school history, we had both of our teams advance to the second round of judging,” Ciavarella.
“This is extremely impressive as the contest is open to public, private, and charter schools as well as schools geared specifically toward math and science.”
The Harrison boys’ team also received one of 53 honorable mentions awarded in this year’s competition, which drew the participation of more than 5,000 teams.
Only 201 teams advanced to the second round, and the honorable mention is “a proud distinction given the rigorous and intense scrutiny that each paper endured,” the Moody’s Foundation wrote.
“Participating in the Moody’s Challenge required us to learn modeling, a field of mathematics new to all of us,” Evan Burger, a Harrison High junior, said in a press release.
“It was interesting for us to solve problems external to what we learn to solve in school.”
