Harrison Residents Look To Beat The Heat

WEST HARRISON, N.Y. – Last summer, a pregnant Laura Triano spent a lot of time at the Ron Belmont Pool. On Wednesday, the West Harrison resident brought her infant son to the pool to beat the heat.

The National Weather Service’s website said Harrison had a high of 98 degrees on Wednesday and predicted it to be 99 degrees by Thursday afternoon. The temperature is expected to drop by Friday but the NWS said it could still be at least 90 degrees.

Ron Belmont Pool Supervisor Dottie Klein said attendance had been down since the pool opened on Memorial Day weekend. On Wednesday, however, the pool saw more visitors than any other day so far this season.

“Whether there are 100 or 300 people here we are prepared,” Klein said. “A lot of times we’ll have to bring water to the lifeguards while they are on duty because they might get dehydrated. We also keep an eye on our patrons and make sure nobody passes out. We have a cooling center for them if necessary.”

Klein said that she also warns people about heat stroke and the importance of applying sunscreen. Not only can heat be a problem, she said, but bees start to come out when the weather is warm.

“We are started to get new people coming here at the beginning of the summer,” Klein said. “There are a lot of new swimmers so we have to be ready to save someone from drowning, too.”

West Harrison resident Jason Neu is in his fifth year as a lifeguard at the pool. Neu said that when it gets hot it’s harder to sit on the lifeguard chair. He said he makes sure to drink a lot of water. Neu said it is also important that all lifeguards take care of themselves so they can help others if the need arises.

“When it’s hot out we get more people in a confined space,” Neu said. “A lot of kids want to use the slide. We want to make sure people who come here enjoy themselves but they have to be safe.”
