HARRISON, N.Y. - After finishing last season with 12 championships and two New York State titles, the Harrison High School Debate Team started the 2011-2012 season by winning its first varsity championship at Monticello High School.
In a competition that spread over two days, all four participating team members had winning records. Sophomore Danny DeBois and Patty-Jane Geller were undefeated in their preliminary rounds and both reached the semi-finals.
DeBois won his final rounds on unanimous decisions and finished the tournament with an astounding 11-0 record. He was named the tournament's top speaker and Geller finished third overall and was the tournament's second speaker.
In the previous week, members of the team competed in the highly competitive Yale University Championship. In the varsity division of over 150 debaters, senior Ally Brabant placed among the top 32 with a 5-1 record and was named the 15th speaker.
Junior Hayley Kronthal competed in the junior varsity division and also placed among the top 32 competitors with a 5-1 record. She was named the eighth speaker of the tournament.
The debate team will travel next weekend to the Bronx Science High School's national invitational.
