Like most rivalries, the week before the big game is filled with excitement and hometown pride. I was happy to see that when the Harrison players looked up into the stands, they witnessed our community rallied together to support them and cheer them on. I look forward to watching the team as they progress through the season. Harrison fell to Rye, 42-12.
The Harrison Public Library did a wonderful job hosting the Play-2- Learn Festival. Our community’s young children, and their families, participated in the program which was geared toward using play as a learning tool. Play has proven to be an accurate marker for future academic success and the children enjoyed a series of activities designed to encourage early literacy and resourceful problem solving techniques.
I would like to extend my congratulations to the Library staff for putting together this valuable enrichment program. It was wonderful to see our youngest residents engaged in this very important and worthwhile experience.
On Sunday, I had the honor of attending the 15th Anniversary Remembrance Service at the 9/11 Memorial at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla. It was a solemn yet moving commemoration, honoring the memory of those who perished on that day. Westchester County Executive, Robert Astorino also attended and was accompanied by Westchester family members who lost loved ones on 9/11.
Family members, and elected officials, read the names of over 100 Westchester residents who died in the terrorist attacks. In addition to a bagpipe procession and a choral performance, the ceremony also included a Laying of the Wreath and a Benediction given by Father Chris Monturo of St. Anthony of Padua Church. It was a thoughtful and somber tribute to all who were lost that day.
The Harrison Swim Team, entering its 31st season, is currently accepting applications. The team will be returning to the Westchester/Fairfield Swim League, which consists of teams in the Westchester and Southern Connecticut area. Students from kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible. Registration is rolling and evaluations are on Thursday, Oct. 13 at the LMK pool at 6 p.m.
With storm season approaching, Governor Cuomo has announced that September is Preparedness Month across New York State. Individuals, families, and businesses are encouraged to take this time to review their disaster plans and insure preparedness for man made or natural adversities. This is a very important measure and can be instrumental in protecting families and loved ones.
New York State has developed a website to guide citizens in preparation for any type of incident at www.nyprepare.gov. The Preparedness Month initiative is sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in partnership with Citizen Corps.
