Kids, Families Enjoy Harrison Camp Carnival

HARRISON, N.Y. – A short spurt of rain Thursday could not dampen the spirit of more than 100 kids and their families who packed Ma Riis Park for the Harrison Recreation Department's Annual Camp Carnival. With games aplenty and prizes to be won, the kids celebrated next week’s end of summer camp.

“It is awesome,” said Roberta Ronan, who watched one of her four grandkids throw a pie at a counselor for two tickets. “It’s really nice and for the little kids – it’s just perfect.” Ronan was keeping track of her 3-, 4-, 6- and 7-year-old grandchildren at the event.

For $1, campers received four tickets, which could be used at any of the games set up by the counselors. Although the pie-throwing table was popular, kids also enjoyed cornhole, a hula hoop contest, mini golf and several other carnival games.

Gerry Salvo, superintendent of the rec department, was glad to see the counselors and campers having a good time. His favorite part was seeing how many of them participated.

Popcorn, cotton candy and other snacks added to the fun. Counselors, who ranged from teenagers to adults, were grateful to see the kids enjoying the games they set up.

“Getting hit in the face with pies” was 14-year-old Jordan Salem’s favorite part of the carnival.

Seeing the kids smile and their excitement when throwing the pies made for a great event, the counselor-in-training said. Peter Barvieiri, his Harrison High School classmate and co-counselor in training, agreed. Both were covered with whipped cream after many pies were tossed at them.

Salem and Barvieiri attended the summer camp when they were younger and decided to become counselors because they had liked it so much. While they took pie after pie to the face, both said it was worth it and they would be back as counselors next summer.
