PURCHASE, N.Y. -- Brazilian music will take center stage at SUNY Purchase when the SpokFrevo Orquestra takes the stage at the PepsiCo Theater.
The SpokFrevo Orquestra plays big band jazz to the rhythm of music of the Brazilian carnival, according to a press release from the college. Their sound incorporates elaborate arrangements and deep roots originating from Recif, Pernambuco, Brazil.
The 17-piece band is fronted by Maestro Spok, who directs the band and plays saxophone. Other instruments incorporated into their sound are trumpet, trombone, rhythm sections, bass and guitar, the college said.
The SpokFrevo Orquestra pushes musical boundaries by texturing frevo with complex jazz improvisation and virtuoso playing, breaking patterns, reinventing tradition but not subverting it, the press release said.
The show is on Thursday, March 29 at 8 p.m. Student rush tickets go on sale on March 27 at noon. Discount tickets are available to students with a valid student ID. Tickets are $35 for adults, $17.50 for children and $31.50 for senior citizens. For more information visit www.artscenter.org.
