HARRISON, N.Y. – Artist Ruth Carlucci had been in gallery shows before but never had her own until the Harrison Public Library displayed her work for the month of January.

A reception for Carlucci’s paintings titled “Winter Grays” was held Saturday to show her work and to commemorate the season. Carlucci said that earlier in life, she would be depressed if it was not sunny out, but through her husband and his family, she learned how to embrace not only winter but gray skies as well.

“I like the subtlety and nuance of gray,” Carlucci said. “I also like to make lines and scribble or use charcoal or pastels when needed, so it's a good combination.”

Carlucci said she is thankful to the Harrison Public Library for displaying her work, adding that it’s a very active library which helped publicize her art show. By having her work displayed all together, Carlucci said, the exhibit shows off the contrasts between the paintings and how they go together.

“You get a whole different insight to what your work looks like when it is displayed,” Carlucci said. “I pulled a lot of things together to get the room ready."

One of the most important things to Carlucci about local art shows is that people can see it for free in their own communities. Carlucci says it gives casual art fans who wouldn’t necessarily seek out a gallery in New York City a chance to experience art.

“It’s great for kids, because it encourages them to make art,” Carlucci said. “It’s open and easy to get to.”

The exhibit will be on display until Jan. 25. The Harrison Public Library is at 2 Bruce Ave., Harrison.
