County Shredding Machine Visits Harrison

HARRISON, N.Y. – Westchester County’s mobile shredding machine will be in Harrison at the commuter parking lot at Halstead and Harrison avenues from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The county’s website says use of the shredder will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The county said the shredder may fill up before 1 p.m., so residents are encouraged to come early. Use of it is free.

No household is allowed to bring more than four 10-inch-by-12-inch-by-15-inch boxes. The shredder allows for only personal and confidential documents to be shredded. Documents from businesses, including legal, accounting and medical practices, will be rejected on site.

The county is asking people who use the shredder to remember to close all bags and bottles tightly and have all chemicals placed in labeled containers in a sturdy box. Preregistration is required if people want to bring 100 pounds or more of solid material or 25 gallons or more of liquid. Acceptable waste items include automotive fluids (except motor oil), pesticides, electronic waste such as computers and televisions, household appliances, and car tires.

The shredder will not accept items including oil and latex paint; explosives; medical waste; needles and syringes; construction and demolition debris; and any materials from businesses, schools or institutions.
