Two people are dead and another is critically injured after the chain of events unfolded in the early overnight hours on Friday, April 11 in Covington, Georgia, located about 40 miles east of Atlanta.
The Newton County Sheriff’s Office said it responded to the store around 1:30 a.m. after it had closed for business, discovering one worker fatally shot and another in grave condition.
A preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect exited the premises to retrieve a firearm before returning to the building.
Inside, the suspect encountered an acquaintance and fatally shot the person.
A second acquaintance was found outside the store and also shot, requiring transport to a local hospital in critical condition.
Following the initial shooting, the suspect forced entry into a nearby residence and fatally shot another acquaintance, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities clarified that it was not an active shooter situation; rather, the suspect specifically targeted known individuals.
The suspect has since been apprehended in South Carolina and is currently in custody.
The identities of the suspect and victims have not yet been released.
The investigation remains active as officials continue to gather evidence surrounding the event.
