Greenburgh Swim Team Enjoys County Championships

GREENBURGH, N.Y. – Swimmers from the Greenburgh Swim Team descended on the pool at Rye Playland for the fourth and final day of the 87th Annual Westchester County Swimming Association “Counties” Championships on Thursday.

Club teams from throughout the county gathered for the four-day event, which ran from Monday to Thursday.

Jackie Cordero has coached Greenburgh for eight years. The challenge of assembling a team for the Counties keeps her coming back each year.

“The fun of putting a team together at Counties,” Cordero said. “We hold one of the top relays, a lot of the top relays, in the county, so to be able to put that together and show it at counties is a good time for me and my coaches, as well.”

Greenburgh won the county championships last year and has finished in the top three in each of Cordero’s eight years as coach. The team was seeded second coming into Thursday.

Despite the amazing success, Cordero said the Counties are a chance for her swimmers to loosen up and have fun.

“I think it’s a good time for the kids to come together at a different level than at a dual meet, to see friends that they swim with throughout the school year and then come together to wrap it up during the county season,” Cordero said.

Greenburgh sent 54 swimmers to the Counties this year, including 15-year-old Oliver Patrouch, who has swam at the county championships for several years.

“It’s kind of fun here,” Patrouch said. “I know a lot of people here. I go to school with a lot of them.”

Cordero said she and her swimmers would take part in the county championship tradition in which the athletes go to the amusement park at Rye Playland on the final night of the competition.

As for what rides they would go on, Cordero said “Superman” was a popular choice among her swimmers.

“I hope to ride it as well tonight,” Cordero said.
