I Have A Dream: Greenburgh Schools Host MLK Day Celebrations

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- Several schools in the Greenburgh Central School District recently celebrated the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., through a variety of peace celebrations and assemblies.

The Lee F. Jackson Elementary School, an International Baccalaureate School, held a peace celebration on Friday, Jan. 13, in honor of King's birthday. To honor the civil rights leader, first-grade students spent part of their day reading stories out loud to groups of kindergarteners. Eighteen kindergarten and first-grade classes teamed up throughout the morning to share stories in the spirit of service to others and peace between people.

Students at the RJ Bailey School also celebrated the memory of King in a special assembly on Friday, Jan. 13. Principal Kiana Washington encouraged students to spend part of the weekend remembering King and performing public service or acts of kindness. "The memory of Dr. King is so much greater than a day off from work or school," she said. "We are supposed to be spending the weekend helping and encouraging others."

Students also watched a video biography on King, as well as a video by YouTube star 'Kid President' about the civil rights leader. The classes also listened to performances of Stevie Wonder’s “Happy Birthday” by the senior chorus and “The Greatest Love of All,” by students Maiya Thorpe and Jordanne Alexander and sixth-grade teacher Carol Williams.
