Edgemont Celebrates Graduating Seniors

EDGEMONT, N.Y. – Sunshine and a hazy blue sky covered Edgemont High School graduates Thursday evening as the group gathered one final time as classmates.

Dozens of parents, friends and classmates braved the 93 degree heat and gathered in the center of the high school campus to celebrate and say goodbye to the Class of 2012. Together, they watched each graduate accept their diploma and listened as students talked about their time in Edgemont.

Student speaker Isaac Marshall reflected on what he called the greatest senior prank ever, how the class “made it rain” college acceptance letters and the grade-wide inside jokes the group shared together.

“This captures what Edgemont is – a family,” he said. “Going to school here was, is and always will continue to be an unforgettable experience.”

The hour-long ceremony behind the high school was held in stifling heat, with students and audience members downing bottles of water and turning their programs into fans.  Still, they listened as speakers talked about everything from life’s uncertainties to the zombie apocalypse.

Senior A.J. Stoughton focused on how fortunate the group was to be sitting where they were that night.

“How can we say there is anything better in life when we are standing here as graduates with our whole lives ahead of us?” he said.

Ameya Acharya, a student speaker, told the group to treasure the memories made at Edgemont and to look forward to the memories that await.

“Today is your future,” she said. “Graduation is called commencement for a reason. You will continue to take strides and to be silly and to make mistakes. You will continue to succeed fail and try, try again.”
