The theme of the conference was place-based economic development, looking at inclusive growth in cities of all sizes.

“This was a great opportunity to show other cities how Stamford is developing ways to stay relevant in today’s economic reality,” said Martin. “It was helpful to see how other cities of various sizes are reinventing themselves with success.”

Martin’s presentation was on creative place-making strategies, and focused on Stamford’s diversity and the ongoing improvements to downtown, Mill River Park and Harbor Point by the City and the Downtown Special Services District.

Also presenting on the “Jumpstarting Revitalization” panel were the community development director of Urbana, Illinois, and Mayor Knox Ross of Pelahatchie, Mississippi. John Robert Smith, former mayor of Meridian, Mississippi, moderated the panel.

“The work being done in the downtown, Mill River Park and in Harbor Point is helping us attract and retain people who want to work and live here. In the most diverse city in Connecticut, we are accomplishing urban improvements that seek to make the community even more inclusive. I was proud to show leaders from across the country what a success we are,” Martin said.
